It has been a really long time, since our last post in the blog of our project Amorium Urban Survey, but I hope we will get to write more in the near future as our 2019 season at Amorium is up and coming.

In Amorium as part of the “Amorium Urban Survey” project, we have been working a lot on satellite imagery in many various ways. Satellite images in Amorium are used on identifying architectural remains visible in the naked eye or the multi-spectrum analysis, but also on identifying and characterizing the Historical Landscape of the rural area immediately outside the city walls. The study of this material is ongoing and has been presented occasionally here and there but still, we are working on final publications of this research.

The site of Amorium is extremely adequate for the use of satellite images to recognize physical features of the Roman and Byzantine city, as there are very few new modern constructions on the site and also the vegetation, either crops or just grassland, offer great variations in the chromatic specter permitting different elements to be viewable each time.
But today I am writing more on the value of inspecting simple Google Earth images and doing this regularly as these images often change and get renewed. The renewed Google Earth/Map images of the different landscapes, of course, entail a certain degree of disappointment for the scholars working with them, since most of them were initially ordered and handsomely paid by organizations and individuals before becoming public domain. As a project, we have also ordered a number of special satellite shots using much of our then budget, only to find them a few seasons later on Google Earth as free. In a way, it is a bit better to come second in this kind of work!

For long we have been puzzled by the city grid of Amorium and the organization of built space in Roman, Late Roman, Early and Middle Byzantine Amorium. The wealth of the excavation so far that have been limiting us in small or medium size trenches going excruciatingly slowly in order to get the detailed stratigraphy and the robust medieval phases of Amorium seemed that they had not left any marks of the canonical Roman grid of the city if that ever existed. So, contrary to other post-Roman sites in Amorium so far, we knew a lot about the medieval city plan, and actually the relative lack of it, rather than the earlier Roman canonical planning.
One of the aims of our Project, when we decided to excavate in the area of the western Lower City of Amorium, was exactly to try and see if there we could learn more about the city planning, and how it evolved through time. This past summer for the first time we could say that in our ‘Large Building’ trenches we were excavating a street of the city that was in continuous use from the Late Roman up to the Middle Byzantine period (5th-11th c.) and might possibly extend further back in the past. This street is parallel to the decumanus of the city following an East-West, more or less, direction. Based on the street under excavation in the ‘Large Building’ trench we proposed a possible preliminary and partial reconstruction of the street grid, in which also the Early Byzantine churches fit in regularly.

So, as part of a casual inspection of the Google Earth satellite record of Amorium a few days ago, I was struck by something that looks like a substantial discovery. Just a few dozen meters east of the excavated street one can see with naked eye what looks like a crossroad where two major city streets intersect canonically. This intersection actually perfectly fits with our preliminary reconstruction of the street system in the area, thus hinting us also for the existence of the straight streets of the cardo parallels. It seems that in this area near the edge of the urban space the medieval constructions did not fully alter the city grid and somehow parts of it survived, and are even visible in the Google Earth photos.

All this makes us even more anxious and impatient of the forthcoming season in order to further explore the evidence of the city grid. So, a piece of good advice is: do not forget also to check occasionally Google Maps/Earth images of your sites because you never know what you are going to find.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: small;">The city of Amorium, located in Phrygia in the Asia Minor highlands, has been under excavation and systematic research for almost three decades. A large number of scientific publications, articles in peer-reviewed journals, and a special series dedicated to Amorium, the Amorium Reports that number already five volumes, have seen the light as the main research products of this archaeological activity along with considerable amount of popularizing guide books. The impact of Amorium excavation has affected considerably the contemporary archaeological approach to Byzantine Early Medieval and Middle Byzantine cities.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: small;">Amorium has also been the stage of international cooperation for many years, and in this way it continues to bring together scholars from Turkey with colleagues from across the world. Many of our historical questions though are in an early stage, seeking for answers that the continuation of the excavation and new research will provide. At the same time innovative archaeological methods (e.g. geophysical survey, satellite imagery, LIDAR modelling) and modern approaches are being applied at Amorium, making the project one of the pioneers in the field of Byzantine archaeology.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: small;">Aim of this workshop is to bring together the members of Amorium Excavations team to confer on the most recent field work and state of research. Additionally we hope to further establish a dialogue on Amorium with other scholars of Byzantium that face similar historical and archaeological questions. In the center of such a discourse stand the challenges of Byzantine historical archaeology and our understanding of the period between the 7th and 11th c. AD, and the evolution of Byzantine urbanism with the formation of “new” or renewed urban centers as provincial capitals, this largely being the essence of the new thematic system. This process is evident in the field, but also is elucidated in the historical sources. In result our two-day thematic workshop will address all kind of questions on material culture, architecture, landscape archaeology, textual history and many more concerning the Middle Byzantine cities.

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">The city of
Amorium, located in Phrygia in the highlands of Asia Minor, has been under
excavation and systematic research for almost three decades. A large number of scientific
publications, articles in peer-reviewed journals, and a special series
dedicated to Amorium, the “Amorium Reports” that number already five volumes, have
seen the light as the main research products of this archaeological activity
along with considerable amount of popularizing guide books. The impact of
Amorium excavation has affected considerably the contemporary archaeological
approach to Byzantine Early Medieval and Middle Byzantine cities.

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">Amorium has
also been the stage of international cooperation for many years, and in this
way it continues to bring together scholars from Turkey with colleagues from
across the world. Many of our historical questions though are still in an early
stage, seeking for answers that the continuation of the excavation and new
research will provide. At the same time innovative archaeological methods (e.g.
geophysical survey, satellite imagery, LIDAR modelling) and modern approaches
are being applied at Amorium, making the project one of the pioneers in the
field of Byzantine archaeology.

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">Aim of this
workshop is to bring together the members of Amorium Excavations team to confer
on the most recent field work and state of research. At the same time, we hope
to further establish a dialogue about Amorium with other scholars of Byzantium that
face similar historical and archaeological questions. In the center of such a
discourse stand the challenges of Byzantine historical archaeology and our
understanding of the period between the 7th and 11th c.
AD, and the evolution of Byzantine urbanism with the formation of “new” or
renewed urban centers as provincial capitals, this largely being the essence of
the new thematic system. A process evident in the field, but also underlined in
the historical sources. In result in our two-day thematic workshop all kind of
questions on material culture, architecture, landscape archaeology, textual
history and many more concerning the Middle Byzantine cities will be addressed.

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">All
presentations and discussion will be in English.

Spoiler alert on the new Antioch mosaics!

So, since a few days I see many friends posting the great photos of Turkish and International news agencies from a mosaic decorated floor from the recent excavations in Antioch. As far can one see from the pics, there are a couple of misconceptions regarding the mosaic. First of all the dating. According to the newspaper they are dated in the 3rd c. BC, this seems highly unlikely for a number of reasons: the style, the arrangement, the execution of the mosaic. Their general disposition looks much more like something made in the Late Roman period, somewhere maybe between the 2nd and the 4th c. AD, and personally I would go for the latest possible dating.

The strongest historical argument for such a dating is the main human form in the middle frame. There we see a man dressed in a long tunic showing with his hand a sundial (clock) erected unto a column. This person is identified by an inscription with the name ΤΡΕΧΕΔΙΠΝΟΣ. This in Greek actually means "the person who runs to dinner". This adjective is known in Roman times, but as a name of an individual is probably a literary creation of a 2nd/3rd c. AD. The Late Roman poet and philosopher, Alciphron in one of his letters describes a person Τρεχέδειπνος plotting to move the dials of the clock forward in order for dinner time to come earlier. Exactly the same as in the Antioch mosaic, thus pointing to the mosaic postdating Alciphron.

This also gives another meaning, I believe, to the whole composition, more of an ironic or satirical nature. The stunning mosaic frame of the reclining skeleton figure named Ο ΕΥΦΡΟΣΥΝΟΣ (the one who enjoys life), laying between a wine amphora and loafs of bread, might again hold a certain ironic meaning: life being enjoyed by a dead person.

So although we, with our modern eyes, would like to see a cool picture of a dude skeleton laid back and only missing the sunglasses of the usual modern internet iconography, maybe we are losing some of the meaning.

“Large Building” has been the name of our trench for many years and in the context cards and sheets of the excavation this name would translate into the short code LB. From last year on when most of our record keeping went Turkish our new name is “Büyük Bina” so our new trench short code is BB. So the mix of those LB and BB makes a nice title with some allusions to the great Beatles song, although there are no similarities in any way between Central Anatolia and the Soviet Motherland. So, let’s just stick to “Back in the LB/BB.”

So here we are again back at Amorium and at our puzzling trench. From August 1st 2015 we began again excavation work at the trench of the “Large Building” continuing from the point where it stopped the previous season. Excavation at the “Large Building” trench is only a part of the Amorium side-project run by the Institute of Mediterranean Studies under the general Amorium Excavations project. Our team this year consists of some old and many new team members and is always under the caring overview of the most helpful Zeliha Gökalp-Demirel, Professor at Anadolu University and Director of Amorium Excavations. The team members are so far: doctoral students and archaeology assistants Selda Uygun (Anadolu University) and Kostas Roussos (Leiden University), and the Anadolu University students: Zeynep Aktop, Demet Yetkinoğlu, Hakan Can Aslanoğlu, Samet Lüleci and Tugay Serin.

Last year based on our preliminary results we thought that our puzzling building could have such a complex ground-plan that I didn’t dare to post any of the imagined reconstructions we drafted, even in an unofficial blog as this. It proved to be a very wise move as only two weeks in the new season and our much better understanding of the building rules out some of the more extravagant versions. I still believe it is a central planned building, but of a square outlay and with some interesting vaulting; the roof ending into a cross-barrel vault with a slight slope to the outside. All the above, along with the prevailing masonry, indicates a Late Roman/Early Byzantine period for our nice building, but still we are miles away of fully understanding the dating and phases. So for any Late Roman/Early Byzantine architecture aficionados hold your horses and wait for the much more substantial reports at the KST of Spring 2016 by our Dig Director and other forthcoming early publications.

Amorium 2015. Interesting LR/EB vaulting with our team member Selda Uygun

But even more interesting than the architecture and possible initial intentions for the fine-built square building is our effort to understand the use of it during the post-Roman period. We know from many other trenches at Amorium that Late Roman and Early Byzantine buildings, when possible, where re-used during the Byzantine Early Medieval period namely the 7th to early 9th century AD. So the big question standing is how was this quite substantial centrally planned building used in the later centuries as it looks not demolished, and it would have been standing tall in the middle of the western part of the lower city of Byzantine Amorium. This again needs a lot of work to be answered as we are still excavating the upper layers and we have not yet reached the Medieval layers of use and occupation. So keeping fingers crossed for some 838 AD Arab destruction here too, like in other locations at Amorium and mainly the Byzantine Enclosure.

Needless to say once more that the participation of the Institute of Mediterranean Studies (FORTH) team to the Amorium Excavations is being made possible through a generous grant of the ‘Stavros Niarchos Foundation.’

Things are heating up for the 2015 summer field season of Amorium and except preparations for the excavation and the survey, research is also gearing up. In few weeks time we are travelling to Sofia, Bulgaria in order to present our project in a very interesting conference entitled "Town and Country in the Byzantine World: Social and Economic Perspectives" organized by Pavel Murdzhev and hosted at the American Research Center in Sofia.

The Institute of Mediterranean Studies team will be consisted by the head of the side-project Nikos Tsivikis and our new team member Thanasis Sotiriou, a byzantine historian. We will present a paper entitled: Amorium and its countryside (8th-11th c.): placing a thematic capital in its surroundings and mapping its historical landscape, and we hope that some great discussion will be held around the issues of historical landscape analysis in Byzantium.

Amorium 2014 excavation season is over, and so is our work at the Large Building trench. After the initial post-excavation "shock" it is time to take some initial glances back to the 2014 finds. The following small note does not cover the work conducted in the other trenches and depot research by our Director Zeliha Gökalp-Demirel and Assistant Director Ayse Ceren Erel who focused in other parts of Byzantine Amorium and mainly at the upper city where spectacular finds are being made.

The excavation at the Large Building in particular is part of a wider project aiming to understand Early and Middle Byzantine civic and residential functions in the lower city of Amorium (actually its west part, marked red in the following topographical map), and to track the evolution of urbanism and city planning from Late Roman to Byzantine Early Medieval and Middle Byzantine times.

This year we opted for excavating an area just 20 m. east of the old Large Building characterized by extensive surface remains of masonry and wall cores. The surface remains implied the existence of four massive piers, roughly triangular in shape and in a regular relationship between them. They seemed to be framing a square area approximately 15X15 m and following the axis of the uncovered parts of the Large Building. The actual visible on the surface elements proved to be the core of each of these piers created in opus caementicium and preserved in different heights. These elements were already easily visible in satellite imagery as you can see in the following picture at the upper right.

During the excavation one of the four piers was partially unearthed, and although very early in the process of uncovering this special building some initial characteristics can be noted. The pier is of general triangular or even rectangular shape with one corner pointing to the center. Its core is constructed with layers upon layers of Roman cement filled with medium stones and bricks. Its side surfaces would have been covered with ashlar stone and brick layers, as we encountered is some better preserved parts. The floor of the building lays at least two more meters further below the level reached. The single massive pier excavated seems to be shaped all around in a series of niches and recesses, with arches and vaults springing from it.

It would be reasonable to suppose that the other three piers would also repeat more or less the same shape and plan in a canonical arrangement. In this case a central area would be framed all around by a sequence of rectangular and semi-circular recesses roofed with a dome or a tower dome. Though it is still very early it seems plausible to suggest that this new Amorium centrally planned building would resemble in ground-plan, although in smaller proportions, other known monuments from Asia Minor, like the baptistery of Saint Mary in Ephesus.

At the end of the season we had the opportunity to work on digitizing our plans with a specialized team of archaeologists and topographers from Anadolu University, under the direction of Seçkin Evcim. Using high technology we plotted in the site canvas, digitally planned the new finds and scanned the Large Building area, in order to better understand what is going on.
This summer Amorium Urban Archaeology side-project continues at welcome Hisarköy under the guidance of the new excavations director Prof. Zeliha Demirel Gökalp of Anadolu
University/Eskisehir with a new and exciting team. Our season started with explorations at the western part
of Amorium’s Lower City. This extended area between
the lower city-walls and the city center hosted most probably important civic
functions and residential neighborhoods. Today this area offers a unique
opportunity for both intrusive and non-intrusive exploration, as it has remained
largely non-built by the modern village’s buildings or covered by cultivated
fields.

Until now excavation attention was drawn by the Large Building, where Martin Harrison had mainly excavated during the 1988-89 seasons. In previous seasons we renewed and cleaned the old trenches and started to create new and more
accurate plans. This year we decided to explore some substantial remains,
visible on the surface, that stand less than 20 meters SE of the old excavation
trenches. The surface remains are part of four massive piers - their
cores created in opus caementicium and surfaces covered with bricks and ashlar stones - and imply the existence of a centrally designed building connected with the Large Building complex. We are all very anxious to see what lies hidden under the Anatolian dust and earth in this little known part of the city of Amorium.

It's walls are well preserved, in some places rising up to more than 3 meters and is consisted of large rooms, some square in layout and some other more elongated, most of them being just the ground floor of a building that would have been raised much higher in stories. Though the excavation had not been concluded during the 1988-89 seasons, two of its most striking features had been unearthed: 1) an almost monumental façade on the East side with a high substantial wall around one of the main entrances (Room 1), and 2) an open courtyard in the middle of the complex with doorways leading into and out of it (Room 3). The large size of the structure and its substantial construction suggests that it was a major public building of the late roman and early byzantine period, intensively reused in medieval times[3].

For this season (2009) extensive cleaning of the walls and the room surfaces (floors?) took place (fig. 1), some of the sections were re-newed for the better understanding of the stratigraphy, minor excavation was executed in room 6 for the sample collection of pottery and determining some issues connected with the building’s floors and finally new ground plans have been drawn complemented with sections and elevations, stratigraphy and technical drawings. On the new plans a first attempt to discern the different building and chronological phases has been done.

By clearing and uncovering most of the walls that were dug by Harrison’s excavation one of the first observations was that the “Large Building’s” early phases as depicted in the ground plan published in 1989 should be broken down to at least two different phases, or better, construction initiatives. The main baulk of the uncovered building extending to the north and west and comprised of rooms 1 to 6 (Building I) is built in a distinct masonry of medium rubble stones set in thick cement like mortar at the height of 1,20 m. the wall is superseded by a band of four bricks in height, this wall lies on a strong also mortared foundation wall (fig. 2), on the other hand the wall running parallel further to the south with only a small part of it uncovered (Building II), as well as the wall of the building to the north (Building III), follows quite a different construction style consisted of a large orthogonal ashlar stones at the lower lines set into a limey strong mortar and followed by lines of decreasing in size ashlar stones (fig. 3).

Further on the attempt of a classification of the pottery produced during Harrison’s excavations in relation also to the coins found at that period provide us a first rough understanding of the chronology of the Large Building and its phases, both construction and occupation. The main bulk of the pottery found is Late Roman Coarse and Fine Ware most of it probably of local origin, with the characteristic Coarse gray earthenware being the majority of it, almost all of it produced by dumped material and not archaeological clear layers. An interesting addition from the 2009 cleaning is a sherd (fig. 4-5) of a shallow dish with internal red slip, decorated with relief pattern including a Christian cross on the inside and dots of red slip on the outside, belonging to an already known group of early byzantine pottery found in Amorium[4]. Medieval pottery was also identified among the old excavation’s materials, including sherds of “Dark Age” fine burnished, faceted ware, Middle Byzantine yellow glazed-incised ware as well as few pieces of Constantinopolitan whiteware, and finally typical Selcuk green-glazed ware.

Further systematic excavation and study of the materials in the following seasons will help to resolve the problems regarding the Large Building’s use and chronology.

[1] The Amorium Excavation Greek Team is most kindly supported by the Stavros Niarhos Foundation (SNF).

[2] R.
